This is the story of Connor. A photo of Connor has been used as an example against child abuse for years.

One thing is certain: there should be no child abuse, we definitely agree on this point. But at the same time, such an important statement should not be based on false illustrations.

Even if little Connor looks bad on his face in a photo, you should be careful not to see child abuse behind the photo with him.

This article is about a very specific sharepic that feels almost as old as the internet itself. This sharepic not only shows little Connor, but also the following statement:

“STOP CHILD ABUSE!” SHARE THIS PICTURE AND SHOW THAT YOU ARE AGAINST VIOLENCE” [sic!]

The whole sharepic then looks like this:

Against child abuse Sharepic
Against child abuse Sharepic

Child abuse fact check

Let's get back to Connor's story, which is interpreted as child abuse in this sharepic. Back in 2012 , back in the early days of Mimikama, we found out that Connor was not exposed to violence from his parents, but rather had problems with a bar stool:

His parents published the photo themselves on Flickr and wrote “Connor decided to wrestle with a tall chair at Steve's bar and the chair won. Ouch!” written as an image description.

In this case it's a little annoying, because false reports or false illustrations are always a little counterproductive to what is actually important information. They give a distorted view of a topic and reduce credibility.

In this respect, you should ask yourself whether you want to use inappropriate sharepics to draw attention to such an important topic as child abuse, not to mention the injustice you are doing to Connor's parents.

No child abuse
No child abuse
