There are plenty of phishing emails claiming to be from PayPal. However, many users are currently receiving an email that actually comes from PayPal. Reason:

The changes to the terms and conditions.

In this very long email, of which we only show the beginning, you are greeted with your full name and it goes on to say:

New terms of use from November 19, 2016
Hello XXX XXX,

We are continually working to make PayPal more secure for you.
This also entails changes to the Terms and Conditions from time to time: Effective November 19, 2016, we will update our Terms of Use and our Buyer and Seller Protection Policies.
The Terms of Use as well as the Buyer and Seller Protection Policy apply until November 18, 2016.
the current terms and conditions .

You can find a summary of what will change to the Terms and Conditions on November 19, 2016 at PayPal.de/agb under the link Upcoming updates to the PayPal guidelines .

How can I tell that this email is real?

It can be assumed that free riders will now also send a similar email, but it will contain malicious links. That's why we're listing the points here on how you can tell that an email is genuine.

The sender

You can forge sender addresses, but many phishing scammers don't even bother. In any case, an email from PayPal always has the sender “ [email protected] ”.

The salutation

PayPal never uses salutations like “Dear User” or similar, but always addresses you with your first and last name.

The links

If you move the mouse cursor over a link, you can see where the link leads at the bottom left. Unfortunately, PayPal does not use its usual domain “PayPal.de” for links, but instead links to “epl.paypal-communication.com”. This domain also belongs to PayPal.

However, if you still don't really dare to click on such a link (we would understand, it's better to be safe than sorry), you can also THIS LINK to find out about the changes to the terms and conditions.
