Germany: The Corona warning app is intended to help against the spread of the virus. However, there is now a lot of criticism due to a technical problem related to the app.

The German federal government writes: Corona warning app worked at all times! Some Android devices prevent apps from running permanently in the background. An update now makes it possible to easily activate the automatic background update in the Corona warning app yourself.

The now released version 1.1.1 of the Corona warning app ensures that a problem with the automatic background update on certain Android devices is fixed. After an update , users must briefly open the app and activate “Prioritized background activity” in the settings.

What is behind it and who is affected?

App compares codes with server

The background: Certain Android devices prevent apps from running permanently in the background. The manufacturers want to minimize battery consumption. This also applies to the Corona warning app.

On the affected devices, the stored codes were not automatically compared with the server in the background - but only when the app was opened or the settings were adjusted accordingly. Important: Despite this limitation, the app always exchanged anonymous codes with other smartphones that are nearby.

The problem had been known for a long time. The developer FAQ for the Corona warning app explains how to fix it. More information can be found here .
