AI music, i.e. music generated by artificial intelligence (AI), cannot keep up with musical works composed by humans in terms of quality. The algorithms and approaches of machine learning often lead to a copyright problem, as they simply take over parts of the pieces with which they were trained and incorporate them into their compositions. This is the conclusion reached by researchers at the University of York , who warn of future ethical and legal problems in this context.
Rated significantly better than AI music
“Our analysis has clearly shown that pieces of music composed by humans are rated significantly higher and, from a stylistic point of view, are more successful than anything that systems that can produce computer-generated pieces have ever brought together,” says co-study author Tom Collins from the School of Arts and Creative Technologies at the University of York.

“Results worrying”
For its AI music study, the team recruited 50 people who already have some musical experience, can read music and are familiar with certain musical stylistic patterns. The evaluation should not be based solely on subjective musical tastes. The participants were then played various excerpts from musical pieces, some of which were composed by humans and some by computers (AI music).
“The results are worrying and raise the question of whether companies that develop such algorithms should not be subject to some form of control or must control themselves. They know the weaknesses in their algorithms and should focus on correcting them. Only then can the AI continue to generate this content, but in an ethical and legal form,” says Collins.
