We all know the shocking stories: white van drives through the streets, children are approached and are about to be kidnapped.

Children approached by strangers? The content in the summary:

Social media rumors about suspected child abductions are not always true. However, the police are following up on all leads and ask that only official reports be shared.

Often the stories are incorrectly reflected observations , but in some cases there is something to it. The police have now reported on the sensitive issue and ask that only officially confirmed news of this type be disseminated.

The Internet, especially social media, is now a heavily used means of communication to reach as many people as possible. This allows news to be spread quickly. However, messages posted online can no longer be monitored.

What may have been well-intentioned may take an unintended development. News that involves children spreads extremely quickly and often does not remain regional. They often create a “silent post effect” and cause fears and insecurities that were neither intended nor justified.

The Internet user reads the message and spreads it quickly, in good faith, without reflection and without research - others should be warned. But is that even justified? Is there any truth to the message? If the message comes from an official body, e.g. B. from the police? Are there any similar messages from the authorities?

Addressed children in Bad Vilbel?

There are currently messages circulating on social networks about reaching out to children in Bad Vilbel and Petterweil. According to current information, the police are not aware that children were approached by a man at school or on the way to school in Bad Vilbel last week.

In fact, the police received two reports of children being approached suspiciously. In Petterweil on Friday (February 14th) around 1:10 p.m., a 9-year-old girl was approached by an unknown driver. In Bad Vilbel, a similar incident is said to have occurred today (February 19th) at around 1 p.m. at the city school. Investigations are ongoing in both cases, but have not yet been concluded.

The police take such reports very seriously and follow up on all reports!

The police therefore urgently ask that you only distribute news of this type that has been confirmed by the authorities. Every citizen can be sure that the police will always inform the population if the investigations and interviews even remotely indicate that there is a danger.

The police generally advise, regardless of an incident, to prepare children when dealing with strangers. The Hesse State Criminal Police Office has a brochure that provides information about this. (Children’s speaker – “…there’s a van there…”)
