Federal Trade Commission to investigate targeted clips

In a formal complaint, child advocates and consumer groups are calling on the Federal Trade Commission to investigate Google and impose millions of dollars in fines on the Internet giant.

The reason: Children's online privacy would be violated in many cases. Google would allow advertising to be targeted at children. The focus of criticism is the video portal YouTube.

Profit from children's advertising

“Google profits significantly from selling advertising to programs aimed at children. It contracts with producers and distributors of online children's programs worldwide. “Google has built a global and very lucrative business based on children’s deep connections to YouTube,”

emphasizes Jeff Chester of the Center for Digital Democracy . The company only recently wanted to work on its content with a five-point plan.

YouTube is accused of violating the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act and intentionally enticing children to find things online. Advertisements for toys, theme parks or sneakers would intentionally appear alongside videos aimed at children. YouTube has already responded, saying it will “thoroughly read and evaluate the complaint.” You would research whether there were things that could be improved. Because the platform is not primarily made for children, according to the spokesperson, YouTube invested significantly in creating the “YouTube Kids App” to offer an alternative.

Just half-hearted blocking

According to experts, Google knows what it's doing. They point to the “Google Preferred” program, which allows advertisers on YouTube to pay a premium to show their ads in the most popular videos.

The programming includes a so-called “ Parenting & Family Line-Up includes channels such as ChuChuTV , Fox BabyTV and SevenSuperGirls

In addition, YouTube would block users who identify as under 13 years of age, but an account is generally not required to watch videos on the platform.
