Developers from the security company Check Point discovered a security hole in WhatsApp and Telegram where accounts could be taken over by clicking on images sent.

As 'Trojaner Info' and 'Check Point' report, security experts from Check Point managed to discover a massive security hole in the web interfaces of WhatsApp and Telegram.

The first good news:

Apps for Android, iOS and Windows Phone were not affected!

Account takeover through photos

The gap affects the web interface of the popular messenger services WhatsApp and Telegram.

Unnoticed by the user, the account is taken over in the background.

How does this work?

To put it simply, the attacker sends an image or photo to his victim via WhatsApp or Telegram. If the victim opens the image, a malicious HTML code is executed in the background while the attacker receives a message that the account has been taken over.

A detailed analysis can be found on the Check Point blog page. (see source)

The second good news is that you can definitely protect yourself!

Protective measures

Check Point had already informed the affected services on March 7th and the security gaps were closed.

If you have logged in via your browser, it is recommended to clean it up and delete the cache. This removes existing login details.

Closing all open sessions also prevents access.

If you now log in to the browser, there is no longer any danger.
