Apparently a lot of power plants will be shut down at the end of the year, which will “herald the blackout” – or so it is claimed.

It almost seems like we've been longing for it, the big blackout.
At least that's the impression you get when you take a look at the relevant Telegram channels, where survival kits and powerless stoves are constantly being advertised. And now the time has come, because apparently there will be so many power plant shutdowns at the end of the year that a blackout will inevitably occur. But the list is grossly misleading!

The list is shared on Facebook and Telegram both in text form and as an image:

Accordingly, the Westphalia, Ibbenbüren, Duisburg, Heyden, Warburg, Jülich, Moorburg, Bremen-Hafen, Höchst, Brottewitz power plants as well as the Grohnde, Gundremmingen and Brokdorf nuclear power plants are to be shut down at the end of 2021. It is concluded that the lack of 8,00 MW of power will soon lead to nationwide power outages, i.e. a so-called blackout.

The status of the power plants

So let's go through the list and see which power plants are being shut down, which are still active - and which have already been closed.

  • Westphalia : Was already shut down on December 31, 2020 (see HERE ). However, it has been classified as systemically important by the network operators and can therefore be reactivated at any time.
  • Ibbenbüren : Was already shut down on December 31, 2020, and was still in the standby phase until July 8, 2021 (see HERE ).
  • Duisburg-Walsum : Walsum 9 was shut down in July 2021 (see HERE and HERE ), the future of Walsum 10 is still uncertain (see HERE ).
  • Heyden : Should be shut down on July 8, 2021, but will continue to operate as a reserve power plant until at least September 2022 because it has been classified as systemically important (see HERE ).
  • Warburg : Was already shut down on December 31, 2020 (see HERE ).
  • Jülich : was shut down in 2021 (see HERE ).
  • Moorburg : Was decommissioned on July 8, 2021 (see HERE ).
  • Bremen Port : Was shut down on July 8, 2021 (see HERE ).
  • Höchst KG : Should actually be closed in 2022, is converting to gas turbines (see HERE ).
  • Brottewitz in Brandenburg : Very small power plant with only 3.5 MW output, probably already switched off (see HERE ).
  • Grohnde nuclear power plant : Will be shut down on December 31, 2021 (see HERE )
  • Gundremmingen nuclear power plant : Will be shut down on December 31, 2021 (see HERE ).
  • Brokdorf Nuclear Power Plant : Will be shut down on December 31, 2021 (see HERE ).
Of the 13 power plants, only 3 will be shut down on December 31, 2021. The other power plants have already been switched off or are being converted; 2 have been classified as system-relevant and can be switched back on at any time.

was already decided in 2011 . The shutdown of many coal-fired power plants on July 8, 2021 is also not surprising, as this was decided by the Coal Power Generation Termination Act (yes, words like that make us great at Scrabble!).

Conclusion

Instead of 13, only 3 of the power plants will actually be shut down at the end of the year. A total of 10 are already at a standstill... and there has been no blackout yet! In addition, the shutdown of the nuclear power plants has been planned for 10 years, which is why preparations have been made for this.

The Grid Reserve Ordinance also uses a system analysis to check whether consumption and demand are still in line - and a blackout is not foreseeable in the data.

The list of power plant shutdowns is therefore grossly misleading.
