The claim

Apparently cows are milked through a hole in the side, which means you can get the milk much more quickly.

Our conclusion

In the first photo, dirt is being removed from the cow's fur with a blower; in the second photo, you can see a cow with a rumen fistula, which is used to research the animals' digestion.

The Facebook page “The world is not pc enough” isn’t even very subtle: the satirical nature is clearly pointed out, and the descriptions are also wonderfully exaggerated. But milking cows through a hole - that's what a lot of people seem to believe.

On the fast track to “Satan’s breeding blood”

This post seems to be causing a lot of question marks over some users' heads:

The proof of the milking method? No. ( Source )

It is said that farmers drill holes in cows to milk them faster. Using this method, a cow would produce 22 pints (around 10.4 liters) of milk per minute, meaning an average cow would be milked in less than 3 minutes. to watch the BBC documentary series “ Countryfile

As a vegan, “Joe”, the operator of the Facebook page, is of course horrified by this, as in his opinion almond milk, God's alternative to cow's milk, which he calls "Satan's breast blood", is much healthier and more natural anyway.

Actually, the satire can already be recognized by the wonderfully exaggerated text, right? But perhaps some users were misled by the two photos? Okay, then let's explain where these come from:

About fluffy cows and a rumen fistula

In the photo above on the left, someone appears to be putting a black tube into a cow - with emphasis on "seems" because that is only implied by the descriptive text. In fact, the cow is just getting fluffy fur!

The blog “ Farm meets Fork ” describes how to get the cows’ fur nice and fluffy.
In the photo we see step 1: The dirt is first removed from the fur of the cow named Lautner using a blower. The black pipe is not a pump, but the hose of a blower.

But we still have the photo of the cow, which really seems to have a hole in its stomach. What's it all about?

Are the cows fed through the hole?
Are the cows fed through the hole?

In 2019, several sources claimed that the cows were being fed through the hole ( we reported ).
And in April 2022, the site “The world is not PC enough” (yes, the exact same site that now writes that the cows are milked through the hole!) claimed that fresh fillet is taken out through the hole without closing the cow kill ( we reported ).

But of course both of these are not true: This is a so-called cow fistula or rumen fistula .

Veterinarian Anke Meeuw already explained to us in the 2019 article what exactly this was about, so here is just the short version:

These cows have a reclosable rumen fistula, which means they have access to the rumen. It is used to research digestion (methane emissions) and to provide medical aid to other animals (transfer of rumen juice to restore bacterial flora).

Things this rumen fistula not used for:

  • For milking the cows
  • To feed the cows
  • For regular meat removal

Summary

The post comes from a clearly marked satirical page on Facebook. In the first photo, dirt is being removed from the cow's fur with a blower; in the second photo, you can see a cow with a rumen fistula, which is used to research the animals' digestion.
