On sales platforms, payment and shipping are often handled via dubious courier services - which, however, are fake!

Fraudulent buyers on classified advertising platforms want to process the payment and collection of their advertised product via the “Postal Courier Service” or via an “ebay selling” platform. To do this, the buyers send you links to the respective services. The websites look professional for the first time. It seems like they actually belong to the post office or eBay. But: These sites are fake and only serve as a scam!

Scam with the courier service “ebay selling”

You have advertised a product on a classifieds platform.
An interesting person gets in touch and wants to buy it. However, the person cannot pick up the product themselves. Unfortunately, he or she is currently abroad or in quarantine. As a solution, the buyer suggests processing via “ebay selling” – a service, supposedly from ebay, for processing payment and shipping. The fraudulent buyer also sends you a link to “ebay Selling”: ebay-pay-de.pay

The product you want to sell has already been created on the “ebay Selling” website. You will be told that the product has already been paid for. You are just one click away from your money.

Anyone who clicks on “Get Funds” is falling into the trap

When you click on the “Get Funds” button, you will be asked for your credit card details. These are needed to send you the money from the buyer. It would actually be logical if it were a real payment processing service. But: The courier service “ebay Selling” is fake and does not belong to ebay!
The criminals use WhatsApp and chat messages on “ebay selling” to try to get you to enter your bank and credit card details.
If you provide your credit card details there, they will end up directly with the criminals. The criminals then make a parallel transfer using your credit card. However, since transactions are protected by two-step authentication, you have to approve them again. The criminals claim:

  • “You will now receive a push notification in the bank app, confirm it and the money will be credited to your account.”

or

  • “We will try to pay you now. You will now receive a push notification, confirm it and the money will be credited to your account.”

or

  • “Acknowledge the push notification in the bank app.”
Attention: If you approve the payment in your bank app, you will not receive any money - as the criminals claim. On the contrary: you transfer money to the criminals!

“Postal courier service” scam

The scam with the alleged postal courier service works in a similar way.
Here, too, the supposed buyers cannot pick up the product themselves. Therefore, they suggest the postal courier service to have the product picked up. The fraudulent buyers send the sellers a link, but it does not lead to the real post office page, so always pay close attention to the URL (internet address)! If you agree to carry out the processing via the “Postal Courier Service”, you will immediately receive another link to a website. On this website you are led to believe that the payment has already been received. All you have to do is provide your credit card details. However, your credit card details end up directly with the criminals. The criminals then explain to you that you have to confirm the notification in your banking app. Do that, but release a transfer! The criminals steal a lot of money from you.

Have you fallen into the trap?

Have you not paid anything yet and have not entered any credit card details?
Then cut off contact with the criminals.
Expect the criminals to be very persistent. Don't let yourself be put under pressure. It's best to block the scammers' phone number. Also report the person to the classifieds platform.
Have you provided credit card details and approved payments?
Contact your credit card company.
Ask if the payment can be stopped or recovered. Clarify whether it makes sense to have the card blocked. You can also file a free criminal report with the police. Here we explain what you should pay attention to.
