Pork and gummy bears banned at a Leipzig daycare center because of Muslim children? Let’s do the fact check here!

An image is currently being shared on social media that is not being questioned much. This picture is a sharepic that informs that pork and gummy bears have been banned at a Leipzig daycare center. The whole thing supposedly out of consideration for Muslim children. On the picture you can read:

Leipzig daycare center bans pork and gummy bears – out of consideration for Muslim children. Share this picture if this goes too far.

The fact check on this topic will ultimately produce two results, because on the one hand you have to look at the facts, but on the other hand, of course, expectations and feelings also have to be taken into account.

Fact check Leipzig Kita

The daycare center to which this sharepic refers, as well as the topic, really exists. In the end there is even talk of two daycare centers in Leipzig, but only one daycare center is noted on the sharepic:

What is important for the fact check at this point: the topic itself is over a year old. After the 2019 summer holidays, the two Leipzig daycare centers planned to remove gummy bears and pork from the menu. There were also various media reports on this, in which one could read ( ZEIT article from July 31, 2019):

Two Leipzig daycare centers are removing pork from their menu – there is great outrage. Why daycare has always been a place of political debate

In this context, one should not forget to mention that this was not a ban. The term ban was first introduced by a large German tabloid, because in the daycare centers themselves there was no talk of a ban, but of consideration for other children who are not allowed to eat pork for religious reasons.

But that's just marginal information. The important aspect for this fact check, however, is that the two daycare centers' plans did not succeed. Due to the many protests, it was decided not to remove pork from the menu. An article from t-online.de :

Two Leipzig daycare centers wanted to remove gummy bears and pork from the menu. But after a heated public debate, the management changed its mind.

Analysis of emotional state and expectations

So at the time it was published to Sharepic (July 2019), the entire story was up in the air and of course not fake. Of course, it becomes problematic if this image is distributed again more than a year later, which is currently the case more often.

Therefore, this point is about an emotional state that is conveyed with this picture. This means that anyone who shares this image is generally committed to ensuring that pork does not disappear from the menu in daycare centers if the occasion is for religious reasons. Therefore, it is not specifically about a Leipzig daycare center.

Of course, this can be interpreted in different ways and seen as Islamophobia on the one hand, but also as a sign of protest for the preservation of traditions on the other. What you ultimately learn from the t-online.de article are the reactions that occurred over a year ago. According to the article, the police had to guard the daycare centers to ward off possible dangers.
