A 59-year-old woman who lives in the Schifferstadt police area received a message from an alleged singer via Instagram. The supposed singer pretended to be in love in countless chat messages.
Love or romance scamming
From the beginning, the fraudster's intention was to feign love and thus obtain cash/valuables from the 59-year-old. Manipulated by the perpetrator, the woman purchased prepaid cards worth around 1,000 euros and handed the codes to the fraudster via messenger. During calls, the 59-year-old spoke to supposed friends of the fraudster.
To form a blood brotherhood, the 59-year-old sent a picture in which she cut her hand. There were never any personal meetings.
Such a type of fraud is “love scamming” or “romance scamming” . Over a long period of time, the perpetrators strive to win the trust and hearts of the victims. The perpetrators use fake CVs, embellished pictures and false names to search for big money on the Internet instead of true love. There are no personal meetings as this would expose the fraud.
