Looking for happiness as a couple online can also mean becoming a victim of love scamming and thus being ripped off by your new “love”.

Finding “the one” or “the one” is often like looking for a needle in a haystack; love scamming gives the dream of true love another bitter note.

Online dating sites and social networks are a popular way to make first contacts, especially when options are severely limited in other ways due to a pandemic. But appearances can be deceiving, because not every contact is actually the person whose profile you see.

Contact via dating portal

A 54-year-old man from Sindelfingen fell for just such a contact. In mid-April he came into contact with a supposed “Hannah K from Stuttgart” via a dating portal. Communication between the two eventually shifted to an instant messaging service, where they chatted animatedly.

As a rule, the perpetrators try to make themselves indispensable in the daily lives of their victims. In order to establish a relationship of trust, the messages initially revolve around your own life, job and family. Finally, the alleged love for the chat partner comes into play. Without ever having a personal meeting.

And then all of a sudden a financial emergency arises.

Money problems of the new “love”

“Hannah K.” also suddenly told the 54-year-old about money problems. In order to be able to travel abroad and conduct business, she would need 5,000 euros. And the money worries and flimsy explanations didn't stop, so the 54-year-old transferred a total of several thousand euros to an account at a direct bank.

After initially becoming distrustful, he finally realized that he had been cheated. The 54-year-old turned to the police. The criminal investigation department at the Ludwigsburg police headquarters is now investigating unknown persons for a particularly serious case of fraud.

The victim probably has no chance of getting his money back. The man was a victim of love scamming. Not only is the loss of the money bad, but he will also have to deal with the disappointment of the faked feelings.
