Half use filters for social media photos – a third delete images with fewer than 100 likes

Two in five British girls and young women fear cyberbullying and are forced to change their natural appearance on platforms such as Instagram. Many of them often delete photos of themselves if they don't get at least 100 likes because they then think they don't look good enough in them. This is shown by a survey by the non-profit organization Girlguiding .

Optics is the most important aspect

2,186 girls and women between the ages of eleven and 21 took part in the survey. About half regularly use filters and apps to improve photos of themselves on the social web.

“These images create a false society in which girls’ appearance is their most important quality,” criticizes 15-year-old survey participant Alice.

A third of those surveyed delete social media images if they do not receive enough likes. For fear of criticism about their appearance, 44 percent don't want anyone else to take a photo of them.

While a majority (92 percent) believe that girls and young women should not change their appearance because of external pressure, 80 percent are considering doing just that.

Pressure higher in Corona times

According to Girlguiding, the social pressure to look your best on social media is harmful, especially during the stressful coronavirus era. Due to lockdowns, people are spending more and more time online.

Girls and young women in particular are confronted with many social challenges even in normal conditions. The fear of cyberbullying is therefore a serious threat to their mental well-being.
