In the past few days there has been a scam in Magdeburg, but also in the Harz district and in Stendal, in which unknown people pretended to be police officers on the phone.

While we warned some time ago about Turkish call centers in relation to fraudulent competitions, recently there have been increasing cases of this practice in the Magdeburg police's catchment area, with citizens of all ages being called by the alleged police officers.
They claim that there were arrests and that notes were found on the perpetrators, which not only included names, addresses and telephone numbers, but also the living conditions of these people.
Questions are then asked about things like whether you live alone, whether you keep your money in a safe, whether you are going on vacation soon, etc. The fake police officer then asks exactly these things. Probably to spy on you.

Note on this procedure:

  • The police will never call you to check things out!
  • Do not give any information to all callers who are not clearly identified on the phone, offer to call them back and look for the phone number yourself from the phone book.
  • Children should also not give information to strangers over the phone.
  • Either don't let yourself be entered in the phone book at all or just give your last name.

Technical possibilities:

  • Whistle method: Whistleing into the telephone receiver is cheap and still effective. It scares perpetrators away. The whistle or other small alarm device helps the individual victim, but does not lead to the crime being solved.
  • Catch switch: Apply for catch switch if repeated. This means that the perpetrator can almost always be identified. But things get difficult when he uses different connections or even calls from a telephone booth. Catch connections must be requested personally from Telekom. The determined perpetrator has to bear the staggered fees - the longer, the less.
  • On modern telephone connections you can still “catch” the caller even after hanging up.
  • ISDN system: A free option to ward off telephone terrorism. The caller's number appears on the display if the caller is using an ISDN telephone.
  • Make use of advances in technology, i.e. find out what technical options are available, e.g. connect a telephone number display device to the telephone.
  • Telephones and answering machines with VIP function: You can enter a secret number yourself and only those who know it will be allowed through.
  • Answering machine: Perpetrators are rarely so “brave” as to speak on an answering machine
If you have a bad or uneasy feeling during a conversation, telephone call or personal encounter, please contact the police immediately on 110.
