Nobel Prize winner Ressa describes Facebook as “anti-fact” and a danger to democracy!

Nobel Peace Prize winner and journalist Maria Ressa accuses Facebook of bias towards facts and describes the US company as a threat to democracy. Facebook is failing to protect itself against the spread of hate and disinformation, she said in an interview with the Reuters news agency published today, October 9, 2021.

Instead, Facebook's algorithms would ensure that the spread of lies laced with anger and hate takes precedence over facts. Ressa is co-founder of the Philippine news site and investigative media Rappler Online.

Yesterday it was announced that she, along with Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov, would receive the Nobel Peace Prize for their fight for freedom of the press and their efforts to expose corruption and abuse of power.

Without facts “no truth”

Facebook has become the world's largest disseminator of news and yet remains biased against facts and journalism, Ressa said.

“If you don't have facts, you can't have truths and trust. If you have none of these things, you don’t have democracy.”

If you don't have facts, you don't have a shared reality; Solving existential problems such as climate change and the coronavirus pandemic would then be impossible.

Facebook is used by more than 3.5 billion people. A former employee is currently accusing the company of repeatedly putting profit above the fight against hate speech and misinformation. The company has rejected the criticism. We reported about it here.
