Blankenfelde-Mahlow For an unknown reason, two small packs of batteries ignited in a drugstore on Monday evening. Shortly afterwards there was also a bang at the battery level.

The burning batteries were immediately removed from the customer area by sales facility employees. Nevertheless, the vapors and smoke coming from the batteries were so strong that a total of 17 customers and staff complained of respiratory problems. Several ambulances and emergency doctors were on duty.

All 17 people, including three small children between the ages of two and five months, were examined and treated in hospitals or had sought medical treatment on their own. Officials from the criminal investigation service and forensic science investigated the scene of the incident on Monday evening. Only the two small packs of batteries were affected by the fire, no other furnishings.

The results of the forensic investigation must now be evaluated. The criminal police are currently checking whether there is any suspicion of a crime.
