The aim of the civil proceedings is for Meta to delete the relevant groups in which environmental aid is repeatedly confronted with hate comments.
Regular threats to environmental aid employees
“The only thing that helps against these eco-terrorists is a rubber truncheon or simply blowing them away.” is just one example of the hostility on Facebook. Federal Managing Director Jürgen Resch and the employees of Environmental Aid have been insulted, hostile and scolded on Facebook for years. There have also been calls for violence or expressions of violent fantasies, some of which are even continued in reality. Resch himself received an envelope containing a fired cartridge.
No adequate response from Facebook
Despite reports of such hateful comments, Facebook did not respond. In the meantime, 300 criminal complaints have been filed with the police, but these also had no influence on the measures taken on Facebook.
The lawsuit aims, among other things, to close a Facebook group run by employees in the automotive industry with more than 50,000 members.
Postings with threats of violence and death were repeatedly made in this group, some of which persisted for weeks. Facebook groups such as “Stop the German Environmental Aid (DUH)!” are also affected. In these, DUH employees are constantly insulted and there are threats of violence, torture, murder and attacks at public appearances.
Jürgen Resch is now suing in a civil lawsuit for the deletion and elimination of these Facebook groups.
According to a Meta spokeswoman, hate speech is unacceptable and active action is being taken against it on all Meta platforms. The content that was reported in this case has also been deleted.
The lawsuit was filed in January 2022 and, according to a justice spokeswoman, will be heard in the Berlin Regional Court on April 13, 2023. Previously, such cases, which also ended up before the court, involved the deletion of individual comments. The lawsuit by Deutsche Umwelthilfe is now “breaking new legal ground”.
The environmental aid is supported by several non-governmental organizations. These include HateAid and the Amadeu Antonio Foundation.
