Just yesterday a man was cheated out of a large amount of money. He received a call from a supposed Microsoft employee around 2 p.m. He said on the phone that access to the online banking process had been hacked and that it now needed to be checked.

Through clever conversation, the unknown perpetrator got the injured party to grant him access to his computer. To do this, the injured party had to confirm a message on the computer. The perpetrator then gained access to the victim's online banking system. The perpetrator debited large amounts of money from the victim's accounts via online banking. The police advise:

  • Never give permission for remote maintenance of your computer over the telephone.
  • Never share your online banking details with third parties.
  • Microsoft does not send unsolicited emails or request personal or financial information by telephone.
  • Likewise, Microsoft does not make unsolicited phone calls offering to repair a computer or check something on the computer.
