The fact check

Yes, unfortunately the video actually shows the illegal disposal of garbage.

According to The Hindu and The News Minute, the vehicles are from the town panchayat, India, whose drivers illegally dumped waste from Thittakudi taluk town in the Vellar river on December 2, 2019. The river feeds the groundwater system, wells and also flows into Wellington Lake in Cuddalore.

The video was recorded by residents and went viral:

The district authority was informed, but initially rejected the allegations. After viewing the video, the district administration ordered an investigation into the case. The authority suspended those responsible and the drivers hired by the city panchayat.

According to district authorities, the garbage is non-degradable and medical waste. The agency expects that “the immediate action of suspensions will serve as a warning to officers throughout the county.”

Conclusion

The video proves that the men illegally dumped the garbage in the river. The perpetrators have been held accountable and yet it remains to be hoped that a suspension will be enough to deter repeat offenders.

So we can only hope that more and more people become aware of the consequences of their actions. Because even if a short-term solution seems attractive and may work for the moment, that doesn't mean that it will be without consequences.
