A picture on WhatsApp shows nail polish and lipstick. Nothing special in and of itself - but this picture actually changes color.

A picture is currently being sent on WathsApp. You can see painted nails and a made-up mouth. The special thing: the color of the polish and lipstick changes! How does this work?

It's about this picture here:

This photo was taken by Argentinian engineer Dylan, just 18 years old.

1- When you receive it, it is red.
2- When it is loaded it is pink.
3 touch and the color is wine red.
4- if you forward it it will be green.
5- If you send more than 10 contacts, it will turn blue.

Does that really work??

It's primarily a little trick : the image is transparent ! So if we take it VERY seriously, neither nails nor lips change color.

Because in reality the picture looks like this:

The checkerboard pattern indicates that the image is transparent in these places and behaves like glass. However, the WhatsApp version circulating does not have complete transparency, but only as a percentage - you can see this by the very slight red shimmer.

And that's the whole secret: the background color and the remaining red shimmer mix and then trigger the effect mentioned above. Apparently nails and lips change color.

Can any picture do that?

No, because it depends on the format in which the image was saved.

Images on the web that should have transparency must be saved as GIF or PNG. However, it also depends on where you want to present the transparent image. Facebook, for example, automatically converts PNG files to JPG. Facebook Messenger, on the other hand, can display PNG files just like Twitter.

And what about WhatsApp? Interestingly, WhatsApp also converts PNG files to JPG, which is why this image is actually not allowed to work on WhatsApp.

However, someone must still have managed to upload the PNG disguised as a JPG (when you save the file, it pretends to be a JPG, but is actually a PNG file). The effect remains there whenever the image is forwarded and not shared or re-uploaded. We don't know how this works (we would be grateful for any information!), but the effect remains unchanged when forwarded.

Play of colors through the background:

And how does the color change work?

Here the background is key! Depending on what it looks like, the nails and lips appear in a different shade. Especially in the version with a green background you can clearly see the transparent areas:

Conclusion:

The supposed color change actually isn't one at all, because this is a partially transparent image.

However, HOW this image CAN work on WhatsApp, i.e. how it could be uploaded WITH the transparency, is actually a mystery.

Oh, and one more thing: the fact that the color changes to blue when you forward it to 10 friends is fake!
