The condition of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has apparently deteriorated further. According to his doctor, the 44-year-old could be close to death. Yaroslav Ashikhmin warned that test results he received from Navalny's family indicated a possible heart attack and kidney failure.

Navalny began a hunger strike three weeks ago to protest his imprisonment. He is now threatened with force feeding. According to the Russian authorities, the prisoner has sufficient access to medical care. The 44-year-old recently complained of back pain, paralysis in the limbs, fever and cough. His family and lawyers expressed concern.

Navalny is currently serving a two-and-a-half year sentence in a prison camp. He is the best-known and most influential opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
