They are particularly sensitive to estrogens, which cause liver damage in particular. Long-term exposure to low doses of estrogen can in turn lead to weight loss , poorer general health and susceptibility to infections .

These previously less well-known symptoms are rather unspecific and the cause is therefore particularly difficult to diagnose. If owners of animals notice symptoms in their pets with which they have had close physical contact, they should visit a veterinary practice.

“The veterinarian should definitely be informed that hormone-containing medicines have been used on the skin of contact persons.”

Dr. Ann Neubert

Particularly strong side effects in dogs

Typical symptoms of estrogen effects in dogs are better known. In these cases, for example, symmetrical hairlessness and teat swelling occur; bitches can show persistent heat, resumption of heat despite castration or uterine suppuration. Male dogs may experience a reduced penis size, sexual attractiveness to other male dogs, and behavioral changes.

Avoid side effects

In order to avoid the occurrence of side effects from the outset, the veterinarian also appeals to pet owners:

“Do not allow your pets to come into contact with or even lick treated skin areas.”

Dr. Ann Neubert

If there is a suspicion of a possible connection between the animal's symptoms and the use of a hormone-containing drug in humans, this should be reported Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety
