With advertising, you will be able to watch Netflix in Germany cheaper than before. Customers have to be prepared for four to five minutes of advertising per hour.

Netflix writes:

We're excited to introduce a cheaper, ad-supported Netflix subscription in November: the Basic Subscription with Ads .

  • The best entertainment at an unbeatable price: The basic subscription with advertising will only cost €4.99 per month in Germany and will start on November 3rd at 5 p.m.
  • Available in 12 countries: The basic subscription with advertising will be available in Australia, Brazil, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Canada, Korea, Mexico, Spain, the UK and the US.
  • Subscriptions for everyone: There will be no changes for existing subscriptions and memberships. The basic subscription with advertising complements our existing ad-free basic , standard and premium subscriptions .

The basic subscription with advertising offers the functions of the traditional basic subscription , with just a few differences:

  • What remains the same : – wide selection of great series and films – personalized streaming experience – available for a variety of television and mobile devices – subscription can be changed or canceled at any time
  • What's different : - Video quality up to 720p/HD (now available for both our existing basic subscription and the new basic subscription with advertising) - an average of 4 to 5 minutes of advertising per hour - a limited number of films and series are available May not be available for licensing reasons (but we are working on it) - no download function

In short, the basic subscription with advertising all the benefits of Netflix at a cheaper price - just with a little advertising in between. Starting in November, signing up will be easy: Visit Netflix.com and sign up with your email address, date of birth, and gender identity to get started.

The basic subscription with advertising also represents an exciting opportunity for advertisers: the opportunity to reach a diverse audience - including younger viewers who are watching less and less linear television - in a first-class setting with a seamless and high-definition advertising experience .

  • Advertising format : At launch, the commercials will be 15 or 30 seconds long and will run before and during the series and films.
  • Advertiser Controls : To help advertisers reach the right audience and ensure advertising is relevant to viewers, we will provide comprehensive targeting capabilities by country and genre (e.g. Action, Drama, Romance, Science -Fiction) offer. Advertisers can also prevent their ads from appearing on content that is inconsistent with their brand (e.g. sex, nudity or violence).
  • Verification tools : We have partnered with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science to measure the viewability and traffic validity of our advertising starting in the first quarter of 2023.

The basic subscription with advertising is being introduced just six months after the initial announcement of a lower-priced, ad-supported subscription tier. This would not have been possible without the hard work of our team and the exceptional partnership with Microsoft. The shift from traditional television is occurring at an ever-increasing pace, and in the United States, streaming has now overtaken regular television and cable viewing .

We are confident that with Netflix starting at €4.99 per month, we have a suitable offer for everyone at a suitable price. Although we are still at the very beginning, we are pleased with the interest from users and the advertising industry and are excited about what lies ahead. As we learn from our experiences and continue to improve the Netflix experience, we expect to roll out this offering in additional countries over time.
