We recently that Facebook apparently handed over the data of a 17-year-old user from Nebraska to the police. The teenager is being investigated for a suspected illegal abortion. It is common practice for the world's largest social network to release user data to investigating government bodies and authorities.

Last year, the company processed around 426,000 such inquiries - an increase of 16.8 percent compared to the previous year. According to its own Transparency Center, Facebook releases data for over 70 percent of requests.

By far the most curious authorities are in the USA (123,653 inquiries in 2021). They are followed by India (95,657) and Germany (31,795).

With regard to the Nebraska case, Facebook's parent company is apparently rather uncomfortable working with the police - at least from a PR perspective. Facebook's parent company Meta released a statement clearly intended to dispel the impression that Facebook generally supports abortion investigations.
