Check first, then order

Thomas is looking for a new washing machine on the Internet. Google immediately spits out countless offers. He chooses the cheapest option and ends up at funkelnmarkt.de – an online shop for electrical appliances based in Germany. At least that's what it seems. He clicks through the website. Company and contact details are available and there is even a brick-and-mortar store. According to a picture on the website, the store is located in a shopping center. It all seems serious. He orders and waits.

Three weeks have now passed and still nothing has come. The money has already been debited. Thomas becomes restless and takes a closer look at Funkelnmarkt.de. Unfortunately it's too late, because it's only now that he realizes that he ordered from a fake shop.

So that you don't end up like Thomas, we'll show you how to check online shops before you order.

Check imprint

For unknown online shops, always take a look at the legal notice and check whether the information provided is correct:

We have checked the information from funknmarkt.de. The company name and UID number do not exist and are fictitious!

Sometimes fake shops steal data from existing companies. Additionally, search for the data on the Internet. Here's how to find out which website is using them too.

Compare prices

Compare prices on platforms such as idealo.at or geizhals.at. If the price is much cheaper than in other shops, you should be skeptical.

Read reviews online

Search the shop online. To do this, enter “funkelnmarkt.de experiences” or “funkelnmarkt.de fake” into your search engine.

We didn't find any warnings, but we didn't find anything else about the shop either. Be careful if you don't find anything. This may mean that you are one of the first victims and the fake shop is still relatively new. Remember: There is usually always something to be found in a reputable shop!

Question payment options

Check which payment options are offered. If the payment options mentioned are no longer available at checkout, you should not order. Also avoid paying in advance.

Here you will find tips on the topic of “secure online payments ”.

Don't be fooled by the professional design

Fake shops are becoming more and more professional. Visually, they hardly differ from reputable online shops. In order to appear trustworthy, funkelnmarkt.de even faked a picture of a shopping center in the “Contact” tab. The picture gives the impression that the “sparkling” business really exists. The criminals used an image editing program to put their logo on a real shopping center.

Do a reverse image search

Use reverse image search to find out more about the origin and context of an image. That's how it's done:

  • Download the image you want to check or copy the image address.
  • Open the Google Images page.
  • Click the camera icon in the search bar.
  • Now paste the link or the downloaded image.
  • Google will now show you websites that also use this or similar images.

Here are more tips for checking images online.

I have ordered – what now?

  • Paid with a credit card? Contact your credit card company and explain the situation. You may get the money back.
  • Transferred in advance? If you paid in advance, the chances of a chargeback are slim. Nevertheless, find out about the options from your bank.
  • Report it to the police.
