Nostradamus and the Locusts

The quatrains of Michel de Nostredame , better known as Nostradamus, have inspired many people's interpretations.

Many people believe that the French astrologer and physicist Nostradamus, who died in 1566, made many predictions for the near and distant future in his cryptic verses. In fact, only a very small proportion of the quatrains are clear, but most are open to a variety of interpretations.

However, we do not want to deal directly with the possible interpretations of his verses here, but only with a verse that he is said to have said, which has been repeatedly posted on relevant pages on Facebook for several months now, both as an image and as a text:

Nostradamus is said to have prophesied:

“And they shall come
upon the sea
like locusts,
but they shall not be beasts.”

Especially in connection with refugees, the intention behind why this quote is posted again and again is obvious:
it is claimed that Nostradamus predicted the wave of refugees with it.

Nostradamus and the Locusts

Locusts are one of the ten plagues that plague Egypt in the Bible. In fact, locusts are mentioned in many places in the Bible, which travel with wings over sea and land and destroy entire crops. Nostradamus also mentions locusts, but only in four verses, but we'll get to that in a moment.

Which is true

The pseudonym “Nostradamus”, the year of birth, the year of death and the painting.

Which is wrong

All the rest.
There are only four verses in which Nostradamus actually speaks of locusts, these are:

Century III, verse 82:

Freins , Antibol, cities near Nice,
are devastated, strong by sea and earth.
The locusts , earth and sea in a favorable wind,
prisoners, dead, mistreated, shot, without martial law.

Century IV, verse 48:

Wood shavings, fertile northern Italy;
expanded, produce
so many flies (horseflies) and locusts (the) clarity of the sun deviates into the cloudy,
eat everything, great plague comes through it.

Century V, verse 85:

Among the (also: because of) the Swabians and the surrounding places
there will be disputes about the cause of the clouds,
naval camps, ears of grass* and burdocks*,
guilt/mistakes from Geneva (Switzerland) will be fully disclosed.
* also: grasshoppers and beetles (mosquitoes).

Century IX, verse 69:

On the mountain of Bailly and la Bresse (?)
the proud/confidants of Grenoble will be hidden,
beyond Lyon, Vienna.
This in heavy hail, locusts on land, not a third will remain.

However, the words on the sharepic cannot be found in any of Nostradamus' verses, neither literally nor figuratively!

Facebook deletes such posts

Several posts of this type were deleted by Facebook due to hate speech and users were therefore blocked.
A Facebook user even went to court because of this, and the Stuttgart Higher Regional Court then decided that the blocking was legal . Although it is not clear from the user's statements that he means refugees, Facebook's “virtual house rules”, which are derived from Article 14 of the Basic Law, . Although the user invoked Article 5 of the Basic Law (freedom of expression), this did not apply because the user did not express a free opinion, but rather made an assertion of fact.

Conclusion

What to think of Nostradamus' prophecies is up to each individual. In any case, he never wrote down the verse often quoted above in any similar form in any century.
