More and more people are buying their bikes online. Stiftung Warentest has now checked nine online retailers and says what service they offer their customers.

Bicycle shops are currently partially closed due to Corona or are almost empty. Quite a few people are now buying a bike online for the first time. The selection there is often larger than in the store. Fahrrad.de sells over 70 different brands, FahrradXXL even sells more than 80.

If you don't know exactly which bike you want, online retailers offer filter options that make it easy to find the right bike. Personal purchasing advice via telephone or chat is also possible at all online retailers.

The maintenance of the bikes is carried out by the local branches of the online retailers. With one provider, an annual inspection is included in the purchase price if the bike is purchased as an online reservation in a branch; with another, the initial inspection is free. In comparison, the regular inspection from online retailers costs between 60 and 125 euros for bicycles and 80 to 120 euros for e-bikes.

Only four of the retailers offer customer-friendly purchase by invoice; the usual payment methods are otherwise credit card or Paypal.

The check can be found online at www.test.de/fahrradkauf .
