No Pallywood – The true story behind the photo

The background was uncovered through image research and reports in the Malaysian media.

The picture has nothing to do with Gaza. It is from a Malaysian comedy film titled Laksa di Ambang Wati, released in 2018. The unusual placement of the medical instruments, such as the oxygen mask on the ear and the electrodes on the cheeks, is part of the humorous portrayal in the comedy.

Already known on the web since 2018

The distribution of the photo received attention four years ago - long before the current Middle East conflict - through the Swedish YouTuber PewDiePie, who in one of his videos . He made fun of the absurd depiction in the photo, which was also reported Malaysian website In 2018, another site on the Malaysian production, which already proves that it cannot be current.

The director's intention

Al Jafree Md Yusop, the director of the comedy, commented on the scene, explaining that it was intended as a satirical commentary on flaws in Malaysian films. He wanted to draw attention to the often unrealistic portrayal in local productions, as he explained in a Facebook post :

Conclusion

The photo incorrectly associated with the Gaza Strip is a screenshot from a Malaysian comedy. There is no evidence that the image was deliberately used to deceive.

Using this image in an incorrect context shows the importance of careful source checking and the influence of social media in the spread of misinformation.
