Police officers throw handcuffs in front of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris at the end of September - this is not a protest due to “corona measures”.

Since the end of September 2020, a video has repeatedly appeared showing French police officers throwing their handcuffs onto the street in front of the Arc de Triomphe.

The Paris police are said to be demonstrating against French President Macron's “Corona policy”. Strictly speaking, it's about the following video:

The fact check

The video shows an abridged version of a protest against a police reform by the then French Interior Minister, Christophe Castaner, and, according to the AFP fact-checkers, nothing to do with the “corona dictatorship” of French President Emmanuel Macron.

The video originally came from the French journalist Rémy Buisine and was published via the news portal “Brut” on Facebook as a live stream on June 14, 2020 at 12:01 a.m.

In the original video, Buisine describes a coordinated effort by “hundreds of police officers surrounding the Arc de Triomphe.”

“They are demonstrating because they have been deprived of the so-called strangulation technique for arrest (…) they hope that the government will reverse their decision,”

explains Buisine.

In June, Christophe Castaner promised a course of “zero tolerance” towards racist tendencies in the police. Among other things, he also wants to ban an arrest technique in which officers press their forearm on the windpipe of those arrested. The announcements led to heated debates and demonstrations.

Conclusion:

Contrary to claims that the police officers shown in the video are demonstrating against Corona measures, their action refers to a protest against police reform.
