Phishing can happen in any number of ways imaginable. For example via email, WhatsApp or website. In the Borken district, emails are currently being sent to receive data from bank customers.

Fraudsters have had success with phishing in several cases in the Borken district in recent days. They managed to get hold of bank customers’ data. This resulted in financial damage amounting to up to five figures.

The procedure: The fraudsters contact those affected electronically. The message in the email sounds obvious: Because the bank in question is now undergoing a change in the area of online banking, the customer's data needs to be updated. The criminals use a link to direct the fraud victims to a website that is deceptively recreated from similar original pages. After entering their personal data, those affected are supposed to enter a transaction number several times - for the perpetrators, this, in conjunction with the customer data, is the key to withdrawing.

The police warn: Anyone who receives such a message should not respond to it. Banks never ask their customers to provide their details in this way. You should certainly not transmit a TAN number upon request from outside. This is used exclusively to carry out online banking processes initiated at your own initiative. It is also worth taking a close look at the sender addresses of such emails. The same applies to the Internet address of the pages linked therein: they often end in a foreign country code.
