Celle: Potential victims of this form of fraud are magazine subscribers whose personal data is obviously used by fraudsters for telephone calls.

The person you are calling will see a phone number with a German area code, for example from Berlin, Bremen or Munich. A publisher's call center answers and says that the subscriber has won a competition. Participation in such a competition is not necessary for this, but the winners are drawn from among the subscribers.

Now the victim is shown exactly how his winnings, namely a large amount of money, will be handed over to him by a notary in a suitcase secured by a code. Since the amount is so high, in some cases 39,000 euros, a security company would be hired for security reasons to eliminate any risk. In any case, the winner can write down the numerical code for the money suitcase, but of course has to keep it secret.

The only thing the lucky winner still has to do to enjoy the money is to pay the notary's fee and the costs of the security service. These costs would amount to 900 euros, which should be paid in the form of vouchers.

This refers to vouchers, for example, from a large online retailer, which can be bought in gas stations and supermarkets.

The supposedly helpful person from the call center notes that it would be better to divide the amount of 900 euros into several small vouchers, i.e. 50 or 100 euros. Because maintaining secrecy about the winnings would be an important requirement.

In a second call a few days later, someone from the call center asked how to code the vouchers so that the notary could prepare everything for handing over the suitcase.

However, this handover does not take place. Only the credit on the voucher cards disappears.

When everything goes really well for the scammers, they boldly try to make another call. In this they apologize for a small mistake - the winning amount accidentally turned up the numbers. Not 39,000, no, the subscriber would have won a whole 93,000 euros! Only the notary costs would now increase accordingly. Could the “winner” buy a few more vouchers?
