The possible uses of the Pop-Its seem to be diverse.

In addition to many game ideas, there are also instructions for preparing mini chocolates, gummy bears or chocolate bars in these molds, especially on social media channels. Especially in the run-up to Christmas, many people get creative and prepare small treats to give as gifts to family or friends.

But be careful! The manufacturer only guarantees the safety of using Pop-Its if they are used as intended, i.e. as a toy. They are usually not intended for contact with food. The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) points out that when food is prepared in these molds, substances that may be harmful to health can be released into the food.

The Münsterland-Emscher Lippe Chemical and Veterinary Investigation Office examined Pop-Its in a non-representative study. It was discovered that when melted chocolate was poured into the Pop-Its, so-called cyclosiloxanes, for example, were transferred from the mold to the chocolate. This is due to the “fat-loving” properties of these compounds. Some cyclosiloxanes have been shown to have negative effects on organs such as the liver, lungs and thyroid in animal experiments.

And what makes the Pop-It molds different from silicone baking molds? Silicone baking molds are made specifically for the purpose of baking. They must meet appropriate requirements so that there is no risk to health at high temperatures or when using fatty ingredients.

Conclusion : When preparing food, only use materials that are intended for this purpose.
You can recognize these, for example, by the glass fork symbol, which is valid throughout the EU, or by the note “for food contact”. Labeling can be omitted if it is clearly evident that the items are suitable for contact with food. If the use of the material is only safe under certain conditions, the manufacturer must point this out (for example, specifying a maximum temperature).
