Cybercriminals are constantly coming up with new scams. Such as accessing data via pop-up windows and then sending paid letters.

A 37-year-old from Villingen fell victim to a scam. The man was ordering goods online when a pop-up window suddenly appeared containing an alleged offer to delete negative Schufa entries.

Although he only clicked on the advertising window and then simply deleted it, days later he received a paid letter for a three-digit amount from a Dutch company based in Maastricht. Apparently, clicking on the advertising window was enough to retrieve the computer user's data that he had previously entered for the order.

Mimikama tip: A good virus protection may help against annoying pop-up windows on the computer. If you surf on your smartphone you could try this:

  1. To be on the safe side, have so-called value-added services blocked by your cell phone provider, because you can never be sure that such advertising banners/apps will not become active in the background.
  2. We also recommend a so-called third-party block.
  3. Also delete the “history” and “saved website content” as well as “cookies” directly in the browser.
  4. Consider an antivirus app.
