Rat nuggets: There is currently a warning going around that instead of chicken meat, whole baby rats end up in the batter in Chinese restaurants.

Rat nuggets – The most important thing to start with:

  1. The chicken nuggets you get in Chinese restaurants are supposedly rat nuggets.
  2. Whole baby rats should be used fried. In Greece, 27 children and 35 adults are said to have died after eating these rat nuggets.
  3. It is false news.

Many people turn to battered chicken when they visit the local Chinese restaurant. Plus the famous sweet and sour sauce. But what if there wasn't chicken meat hidden under the dough, but whole (!!!) baby rats?

The fact check

The claim became particularly widespread in the Spanish-speaking world in 2019. ( we reported )

The origin of this message is a Spanish website called “24/7 Aldia” (unfortunately no longer available). However, the site was full of clickbait topics and sometimes misleading or simply false articles.

There are no reports of deaths related to the consumption of these rat nuggets in the Greek, Spanish or Mexican media.

the Spanish site Publico, it is false news.

Conclusion:

Even if the shape of chicken nuggets from a Chinese restaurant resembles baby rats, this does not prove that there are complete animals under the breading. This would somehow be noticeable when consumed - you would notice it if you chewed on bones and innards.

In addition, there are absolutely no reports of poisoned children and adults in Greece who ate the meat in question.
