Dillenburg - A 94-year-old threatened an ambulance crew and Herborn police officers with a double-barreled firearm early on Sunday morning (July 9, 2017). Service dog “Scotty” distracted the pensioner so that he could be overpowered by the police.

At 4:40 a.m., the rescue control center informed the Herborn police about an operation on Ringstrasse. A 94-year-old had apparently injured himself with a knife and refused treatment by an ambulance crew. With a knife in his hand, he wouldn't let anyone get close to him.

When law enforcement officers arrived, Ehringshäuser was sitting on his bed armed with a double-barreled firearm and a knife and pointing the barrel of the weapon at anyone who tried to enter the room. In order to overpower the pensioner, the police officers positioned the service dog “Scotty” unnoticed in front of the bedroom. He stormed into the room barking and distracted the pensioner.

The police officers who followed took advantage of the effect of surprise and overpowered him. The 94-year-old suffered a slight cut on his knee. This was followed by transport to a hospital for outpatient treatment and then admission to a psychiatric facility.

During the subsequent search of the apartment, the law enforcement officers seized four live firearms, two blank guns as well as ammunition, gas, a folding knife and brass knuckles.
