Because various Internet platforms did not delete “calls for banned rallies by government critics,” they are now being sued by Russian regulatory authorities.

Background: After Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny was arrested and sentenced to several years in prison, his supporters called for protests on social networks. However, the demonstrations and rallies were banned by the Russian government.

No statements from internet platforms

The Russian authorities are now charging Google, Facebook and Twitter with disseminating calls for banned rallies by government critics. According to the Interfax news agency, this is because the platforms have not deleted the protest calls. The companies could now face penalties of four million rubles (45,400 euros). Further proceedings have been initiated against Tiktok and Telegram. Apart from Google, none of the companies have commented on this so far. Google responded but declined to comment.
