Facebook is currently testing a new tag that will mark articles that are published as satire in the future. But does this labeling make sense? What does Facebook expect from this?

And – NO – ZDDK/Mimikama doesn’t have a hand in this. That's not even in our area of interest. In reality, Facebook's plans would be such that references to similar articles would be preceded by the label [satire].

The thought behind it

“We are doing this because people have approached us who would like to see a clearer distinction between satirical and serious reports in this area.”

Facebook supposedly responds to user comments that have problems distinguishing between them. This of course sounds plausible, as we can confirm from our own experience that many users actually have problems recognizing satire and classifying it.

We described this CLEARLY in an article .

Especially since satirical reports were often misreceived at key points and caused political problems. Just think of FPÖ leader Strache, who was misled by a satirical article . There are said to have been similar incidents with satirical sites in the USA.

Paternalism?

Currently, the satire tag is only being tested in the US and in conjunction with articles from “The Onion”. However, Facebook is currently keeping a low profile about the extent to which this satirical tag could be displayed in the future.

In fact, if implemented, the post on Facebook could also be affected, at least in the “Related” posts.

The question that now arises: can satire as such be exposed prematurely? Isn't that robbing her of her charm, her wit, even her entire being?

We have captured a few voices that reflect different views.

The enlightened will think it's ridiculous, but when I see how yesterday someone was unsure whether it was satire or real ("Man was sent to psychiatry because he doesn't have a Facebook account"), maybe it's really necessary.

It ruins the fun you have reading the feedback at Postillon. So… not good!

I even read the headline somewhere *Fb thinks its users are stupid*
I actually found this headline very presumptuous.
Because not everyone, especially a lot of young people who are still too green behind the ears and who can still be fooled by an X for a U, have a hard time recognizing the satire in some articles.
I think that has something to do with the fact that a postilion is not known in the circles, a lack of life experience to be able to immediately recognize the article as satire and a certain degree of naivety is part of accepting such articles as true, but I definitely don't have it STUPID to do.

The [Satire] Day

This labeling is definitely not an invention of ZDDK/Mimikama, on the contrary, because we generally call for people to critically question unknown and bizarre content. Labeling it satire would only ultimately destroy it.

BUT!
We have an idea: dear Facebook:
It would be better if “FAKES” or nasty traps were marked with a “ZDDK notice”.
