" Dizziness . The following incident proves that there are still people who, despite all warnings, indulge in the most obvious fraud: In the months of July up to and including November 1875 and January 1876, people from Bilbao and St. Andrä near Bayonne, from Burgos, Santander, arrived at the monastery of St. Bernhard and Castro wrote letters in German to the address of Benedikt Duschl in Sighartstein and Amalia Frauenschuh in Henndorf , written by “Wilhelm Haller” with the content that a treasure consisting of thalers, gold and precious stones worth 20,000 thalers was hidden in the Sighartsteiner Bräuhaus Treasure could be found by him if he had the means to travel. – Under this pretense and the promise of sharing, Amalia Frauenschuh gradually sent 82 fl., without having received any further news from the letter writer.”

So there was advance payment fraud back then too!

The recipients of the letters were apparently promised a share of the treasure of 20,000 thalers if they financed the fraudster's trip... and they probably never saw their money again.

Is that real?

Yes , this report was actually on page 3 of the “Salzburger Volksblatt” from May 30, 1876.

So be careful: whether it was a dubious letter back then or today loans with low interest rates and the African prince with the million-dollar inheritance:

Times are changing. People don't.
