According to Brigham Young University, Reddit users often consider trolling to be meaningful communication!

People in whom the dark triad of personality (narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy) meets a tendency to gloating are more likely to become online trolls. This is the conclusion of a study by Brigham Young University (BYU). Malicious people often see trolls as a form of communication that enriches online discourse. The study also shows that men are more likely to find the behavior okay.

One Reddit woe...

Trolls seem to rear their ugly heads online anytime and anywhere. To find out what motivates people to do this, the researchers used an online survey in which over 400 Reddit users took part. “People who exhibit the characteristics known as the dark triad are more likely to engage in troll behavior when they enjoy watching others suffer,” says Pamela Brubaker, a public relations professor at BYU. In addition, according to the researchers, those who like to gloat do not see trolling as destructive, but simply as a form of dialogue.

Those who particularly enjoy other people's failures often view trolling as acceptable behavior. According to the study, men are more likely to consider it functional communication than women. “That may be because it seems appropriate for the medium,” emphasizes BYU communications scholar Scott Church. In particular, users who use Reddit heavily might believe that trolling is appropriate anytime and anywhere because people do it on Reddit.

Enable civilized discussion

However, the researchers emphasize that users who very openly express their opinions on various topics are not necessarily trolling. According to the study, there is no correlation whatsoever. This suggests that civilized online discussions are certainly possible. Church says it's helpful to remember that others are people too, with friends, family and feelings. “If we forget that they are real people and only see them as usernames or avatars, trolling becomes easier.”
