Hanover / Garbsen: Saturday evening, February 11, 2017, a 31-year-old feigned a gunshot wound to a relative, triggering a police operation that lasted several hours.

According to the current state of the investigation, the 31-year-old man called his cousin (28 years old) at around 5:45 p.m. and asked him to come to a company premises in an industrial area in the Stelingen district because he had just been shot there.

After the 28-year-old arrived at the property, he saw his relative walking out of a building holding an obviously bloody pillow in front of his stomach.

A few minutes later, the injured man lost consciousness while sitting in the car, so his cousin took him to a hospital in his car.

While driving, the 28-year-old man had to stop at a traffic light on federal highway 6 near Stöckener Straße.

“It was a joke”

Shortly after the vehicle came to a stop, the 31-year-old suddenly got out of the car and ran towards Leinemasch.

His relative then called the police and two witnesses who became aware of the situation also called the emergency number.

Since the officers had to assume that the relative had been seriously injured based on the 28-year-old's information, they immediately initiated extensive search measures.

Several patrol cars, a police helicopter and a service dog were involved for hours.

Further investigations gave rise to legitimate doubts about the alleged course of the crime. During a court-ordered search of the company building in Stelingen, the officers found a bottle of fake blood. A quick test also showed that the liquid on the pillow was not human blood either.

At around 10:15 p.m. the officers were able to speak to the 31-year-old by telephone and he admitted that the whole operation had been a joke.

The police are now investigating him on suspicion of faking a crime. In addition, it will be examined to what extent he can contribute to the costs of the operation.
