How would you react if you received a call from a (fake) police officer saying that your daughter had been arrested for a fatal accident?

In a phone call on Wednesday afternoon (May 19th), a fake police officer demanded tens of thousands of euros from a senior citizen (79) from Cologne-Holweide as a deposit for the 79-year-old's daughter. She allegedly caused a fatal traffic accident and was arrested.

The wrong policewoman

The Cologne woman followed the fraudster's instructions and handed over the requested cash in a yellow postal bag around 3 p.m. to a strikingly slim stranger with shoulder-length brown hair at the agreed meeting point on Bergisch Gladbacher Straße in front of the post office there.

The unknown woman is said to have been around 13 to 15 years old, between 1.60 and 1.70 meters tall and to have had a narrow face and a very slim waist. At the time of the crime she was wearing a brown top, a brown cardigan and beige tight trousers. When the pensioner's “real” daughter called late in the afternoon, the fraud was discovered.

The police ask

Who made suspicious observations on Bergisch Gladbacher Straße near the post office (house number 682) on May 19th between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. that could be related to the handover of money? The Criminal Investigation Department 25 will receive information on 0221 229-0 or by email to [email protected] .

The police warn

The police expressly warn against fraudsters who use shocking stories to target the savings of citizens in Cologne and Leverkusen. Recently, investigators from Criminal Investigation Department 25 registered an increasing number of shock calls.

Be suspicious on the phone, especially when it comes to money and, as in this case, your relatives. Hang up and, to be on the safe side, call “110” and ask the real police. The officers continue to help.
