Search engines like Google are slowly being sidelined by 16 to 34 year olds worldwide. Social media is increasingly taking its place, with 48 percent trusting it, according to a survey by US cloud and software provider Meltwater . Together with the creative agency We Are Social , it was determined that search engines only have a usage rate of 45 percent. The growing importance is also reflected in global advertising spending. They have more than doubled since the outbreak of the corona pandemic.

Radio and television are out – search engines are sidelined

Half of social media users worldwide actively visit social platforms to learn more about brands. They now spend more than two and a half hours a day on social platforms. That's 40 minutes more than the time they have left for radio and television. The search engines also fall behind.

When it comes to overall Internet usage today, it's more about quality than quantity, as they say. Daily usage rates are now at levels seen in 2019, before the pandemic had a profound impact on the world's digital behavior. The typical surfer worldwide has reduced their average daily internet usage by twelve minutes to six hours and 37 minutes over the past 20 months. That's a decrease of almost five percent compared to the previous year - despite the increase in the time they spend on social media.

Companies should be present

According to Alexandra Saab Bjertnæs, Chief Strategy Officer at Meltwater, companies that want to remain competitive need to take this trend into account. “Social media will play an even more important role as users turn to platforms like TikTok and Instagram for help with decisions. With more than five billion internet users, it is more important than ever that companies and others deliver relevant, impactful and targeted content to capture attention,” she adds.
