Young women and girls with revealing profile pictures are perceived as less competent by female colleagues, according to a new study from Oregon State University.

“If a young woman is attractive and presents herself in this way, other women seem to doubt her intelligence - as if an intelligent woman did not need this form of self-presentation”…

,… explains psychologist Dominik Rosenauer to pressetext. Sexy photos on social media also reduce the external and social attractiveness of their self-promoters, according to the US researchers.

Strong social pressure

“Teenagers and young women are under pressure to appear sexy online, but publishing these photos can have more negative consequences than positive ones”...

,…says psychology professor Elizabeth Daniels. Users who post such photos on their Facebook page risk negative reactions from their colleagues.

However, less attractive photos attract less attention from male Facebook friends and are therefore published less frequently.

“The boundary between private and public is blurring on the internet. Private content that you don’t want to share with everyone is accessible to all users in the friends list”…

..., says Rosenauer. For the study, Daniels created two Facebook profiles that only differed in their sexy and neutral profile pictures. The profiles were rated by girls and women aged 13 to 25 on their attractiveness in terms of appearance, social sociability and competence.

The profile with the neutral image performed better in all three areas. Sexy photos have a particularly negative impact on competence.

Professional social media presence

In social media, it is primarily female users who are under pressure to present themselves attractively on the web. Daniels advises carefully considering your choice of photos on Facebook . Profile pictures should reflect the personality and character of the girls and not just show their physical assets. According to the expert, those who use sexy pictures can also communicate their skills and competencies credibly and professionally

“In general, it is not advisable to use digital images, as they could spread unhindered on the Internet and come to light years later”…

..., emphasizes Rosenauer. Images that find their way online are difficult to remove. A careless photo posting could lead to cyber bullying or even a problem at work a few years later.
