UPDATE: March 10, 2023 / 3:31 p.m

35-year-old fatally injures several people - previous findings on the large-scale police operation in Hamburg-Alsterdorf

Time of crime: March 9, 2023, 9:04 p.m.
Crime scene: Hamburg-Alsterdorf, Deelböge

A 35-year-old German is strongly suspected of having broken into a community center in the Alsterdorf district of Hamburg yesterday evening and, as of now, injured 16 people - some of them fatally - by firing shots from a pistol. It appears that the alleged perpetrator then committed suicide with the same weapon.

According to the previous findings of the police and the capital offenses department of the public prosecutor's office, the man gained access to the community center through a window and suddenly used a firearm to attack participants at an event there.

Just a few minutes after the first emergency call, emergency services from the support patrol for difficult operations (USE) entered the building. As they continued, they found, among other things, a fatally injured male person on one of the upper floors. This was later identified as the 35-year-old suspected lone perpetrator. Apparently, after police officers entered the building, he fled to an upper floor and took his own life there.

Since it was initially unclear whether one or more armed perpetrators were on the run, the police searched extensively throughout the city. The “Libelle” police helicopter was also involved in these measures. In addition, alarms were triggered via “Cell Broadcast” and the warning apps “KATWARN” and “NINA” to warn the population. Intensive investigations did not substantiate the initial suspicion that another perpetrator was on the run.

According to current information, seven people between the ages of 33 and 60, including the 35-year-old alleged perpetrator, and an unborn child (28 weeks) were fatally injured as a result of the rampage. The 33-year-old mother survived with serious injuries. In addition, three people (45, 38, 22) suffered life-threatening injuries, three others (32, 26, 22) suffered serious injuries and one man (32) suffered minor injuries. The crisis intervention team of the German Red Cross provided acute psychosocial care for those directly affected, relatives and witnesses. The intensive investigations by the public prosecutor's office and the police, including into the perpetrator's motive, are still ongoing.
