“Signal for help” is a silent signal that victims of domestic violence can use to call for help.

The corona pandemic is also affecting other areas through measures. The number of cases of domestic violence also increased during the lockdowns.

Last year, a way to inconspicuously call for help was spread on the Internet. The “Signal for help” campaign was initiated by the Canadian Women's Foundation .

Victims of domestic violence can use this simple gesture even if other people, such as the perpetrator, are in the same room, as the video also shows.
Video calls were also shown here as a possible means of communication, as these were used more frequently during lockdowns.

The help signal quickly went viral thanks to some TikTok users who recorded this in their videos. They have been seen and shared millions of times.

At that time, the Canadians Women's Foundation, together with an advertising agency, considered how the publication of this "secret symbol" should optimally look like so that as many victims as possible could be reached, but possible perpetrators would not be revealed. But they decided to make it as popular as possible. “The more people who know, the better.”

Missing North Carolina girl rescued

This decision has now saved a missing 16-year-old from North Carolina. A driver in Kentucky contacted police after observing a girl in a car who appeared to be in distress.

He also saw the girl make that very gesture - the "signal for help" - indicating she needed help, Laurel County Sheriff's Deputy Gilbert Acciardo told CBC News.

Laurel County Sheriff's investigators rescue 16-year-old missing North Carolina girl and arrest person who had her:
Laurel County Sheriff John Root reports: Laurel Sheriff's Lieut.
Chris Edwards and Detective Robert Reed arrested James Herbert Brick, age 61, of Cherokee, North Carolina, on Thursday afternoon, November 4, 2021, at approximately 12:33 p.m. The arrest was made at the intersection of I-75 at KY 80 (Exit 41) after Laurel Sheriff's investigators were dispatched by Laurel 911 to observe a silver Toyota allegedly driving through the construction area north of London - the vehicle was reported to be in Reported driving south. The man who called police was behind the vehicle and noticed a female passenger in the vehicle making hand gestures that represent domestic violence on the social media platform "Tik Tok" - I need help - domestic violence. He notified 911 that the woman appeared to be in distress. He also discovered that the vehicle was driven by a male person.

As the vehicle traveled south on I-75, the man continued to pursue the vehicle and provided an update to the emergency dispatch center in Laurel about the suspect vehicle's location. Laurel Sheriff's investigators positioned themselves at Exit 41 near London to look for the suspect vehicle and were advised by the man that the vehicle exited the interstate at Exit 41. As the suspect vehicle exited the interstate, Laurel Sheriff's detectives and deputies stopped the Toyota and examined the occupants.

The investigation revealed that the passenger was a juvenile who was reported missing by her parents from Asheville, North Carolina, on Tuesday morning. A check in the NCIC confirmed that it was a missing person. The female juvenile told sheriff's investigators that she traveled with the male throughout North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio, where the defendant had relatives. When the defendant's relatives discovered that the woman in his care was a minor and reported missing, the defendant left Ohio south and the young woman attempted to attract the attention of motorists to call 911. During the investigation, officers also found a phone in the defendant's possession that allegedly depicted a teenage girl in a sexual manner.

James Herbert Brick was charged with first-degree unlawful imprisonment and possession of a sexual image by a minor over 12 years of age but under 18 years of age - first offense.
This individual was lodged at the Laurel County Correctional Center. The attached photograph of the defendant was provided courtesy of the Laurel County Correctional Center. […] The investigation is ongoing.
