They pose as people interested in renting an apartment, carry the walker into the apartment or ask for an envelope so that they can leave money with a neighbor.

The Cologne police warn urgently about a variety of scams targeting older people: Time and again, the perpetrators manage to gain access to the apartments of randomly selected seniors and steal from them.

Yesterday alone (September 10th), two siblings (w72, w70), from Mülheim, a couple (w77, m83) from Holweide and a lady (85) from Neuehrenfeld called the police because they had good-naturedly fallen for fraudsters. Fortunately, nine other attempts to defraud senior citizens throughout the city failed.

Yesterday's cases:

Between 11:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.; Cologne, Mülheim; Green Street

An unknown woman rang the doorbell of the two sisters and pretended to be interested in an apartment in the apartment building. Since no one had opened the door for her in this apartment, she asked the two women for a note - she wanted to slip a message under the door to make an appointment to view it.

While she was writing on a piece of paper and engaging the two Cologne women in conversation, another stranger came into the apartment.

After the women had left the apartment, the siblings noticed that their valuable jewelry had been stolen.

Around 4:15 p.m.; Cologne-Holweide; Zillerstrasse

When a couple (w77, m83) returned from shopping, they were greeted by an unknown woman who helped the 77-year-old carry her husband's walker through the stairwell to the apartment. When she arrived at the apartment, the supposedly helpful person asked for a piece of paper so that she could write down a telephone number. Suddenly a second woman came into the apartment. The couple sent them both away. Unfortunately, it was already too late: they had stolen the Cologne woman's handbag.

Around 4:45 p.m.; Cologne-Neuehrenfeld; Hadersleber Street

Two unknown women also rang the 85-year-old's doorbell and asked for an envelope. You would like to leave 50 euros in a neighbor's mailbox.

While the senior citizen fetched an envelope, the strangers entered her apartment, one of them laid out several small cloths on her kitchen table while the other “presented” a large cloth in the hallway of the ground floor apartment. The 85-year-old then threw the women out, but the fraudsters still managed to steal several valuable pieces of jewelry. Witnesses wanted:

Those who were robbed unanimously described the perpetrators, who may have been from the South, as being between 40 and 60 years old, with long dark hair and some with a chubby build.
