Log out of the main account
If it's an iPhone, you log out of your Apple account. For Android phones, this is the Google account. There may still be manufacturer accounts such as Samsung. You should also log out of these.
Encrypt
On Android devices, such an option can usually be found in the settings under “Security”.
You can skip this step for iPhones as they are generally encrypted.
Reset to default
As a final step, you can now reset the smartphone to factory settings.
