The SMS fraud scam
A 47-year-old woman from the Groß-Gerau district initially received a text message last week that gave the impression that the sender was her financial institution. The scammers asked the woman to verify and complete her details. The criminals probably gained access to their victim's online banking.
Later, an alleged employee of the bank's security department got in touch, tricked the woman into believing that fraudulent debits were being made from her account and ultimately got her to give out several TANs over the phone. The fraudsters then debited a total of almost 20,000 euros from the victim's account.
The police warn
The officials of the Rüsselsheim fraud commission K 23 warn:
Ignore such requests! Contact your financial institution personally to clarify which emails or SMS are legitimate. If the prompting process was activated unintentionally, pull the plug and contact a PC specialist. Inform your bank so that unlawful debits can be prevented and report it to the police.
