• Women share private things more often than men
  • Older people are more likely to post about politics and current affairs

53 percent of those who share their own posts or upload content do so on private topics. At 61 percent, the number of women is significantly higher than that of men (46 percent). These are the results of a representative survey commissioned by the digital association Bitkom among 1,032 Internet users aged 16 and over, including 593 social media users who post content and posts themselves.

The younger you are, the more private things are posted

Accordingly, younger people between the ages of 16 and 29 (66 percent) post details about their personal lives significantly more often than other age groups. Among 30 to 49 year olds it is 54 percent, 46 percent among 50 to 64 year olds and 34 percent of those over 65 years old.

Social media users are the second most likely to post about their vacations or trips. 42 percent have already shared posts or uploaded content. For a third, current events are a reason for their own posts (33 percent) - for older people more than for younger people. Among those over 65, 43 percent write articles about current events and 43 percent of those between 50 and 64 years old. Among 30 to 49 year olds it is still 32 percent. Among younger people between the ages of 16 and 29, a quarter (25 percent) post about current topics on social media.

The older, the more political content

The situation is similar when it comes to posts about political topics: at 13 percent, those under 30 are significantly less likely to comment on this on social media than those over 65 (35 percent). “On social media we can share our opinions and our own experiences, be creative, inform ourselves, actively participate in digital life and stay in touch with people all over the world,” says Lina Wöstmann, consultant for media policy and platforms at Bitkom.

“Users should choose the privacy settings that make sense for them, rely on reliable sources or check facts and, if necessary, use the platforms’ options to report inappropriate content and have it checked.”

Overall, 57 percent of users also post posts on social networks or upload content themselves. The topics of music (27 percent), sports and fitness (26 percent), comedy and entertainment (24 percent) are about the same. 20 percent of those who upload or share content on social media post about health and medicine, and 16 percent post about economics, business and finance. Art and culture (16 percent), technology and digital (15 percent) and science (14 percent) are, on average, topics for one in seven people on which they write their own posts.
